Convolutional Neural Network-based harmonic mitigation technique for an adaptive shunt active power filter

    Get PDF
Owing to the use of nonlinear loads in the distribution side, there are power quality issues such as voltage swell/sag, harmonics, flickers, voltage imbalance, and outage. The harmonics in power system affect the quality of power and hence a suitable methodology is vital to mitigate the harmonics and compensation of reactive power. In this paper, CNN (Convolutional Neural Network)-based harmonic mitigation is performed. A 5-level cascaded H-bridge inverter is employed as a shunt active filter in which the reference current is generated by the SRF theory, incorporating CNN for harmonic extraction. The DC-link potential across capacitor is retained by means of ANN (Artificial Neural Network) controller whose behaviour is compared with a proportional controller as well as FLC. The gating pulse for the cascaded inverter is generated by means of PWM generator incorporated with Hysteresis Current Controller (HCC). By this control strategy, the harmonics in the current and voltage get mitigated; subsequently, the reactive power compensation is achieved with unity power factor. By implementing the five-level inverter, the THD and the settling time are minimized. The performance of the system is analysed using MATLAB for nonlinear load and the hardware is implemented with FPGA Spartan 6E. The THD of 0.93% is accomplished in simulation and 1.4% in the hardware execution

Disposable Patterned Electroceutical Dressing (PED-10) Is Safe for Treatment of Open Clinical Chronic Wounds

Objective: To evaluate if patterned electroceutical dressing (PED) is safe for human chronic wounds treatment as reported by wound care providers. Approach: This work reports a pilot feasibility study with the primary objective to determine physically observable effects of PED application on host tissue response from a safety evaluation point of view. For this pilot study, patients receiving a lower extremity amputation with at least one open wound on the part to be amputated were enrolled. Patients were identified through the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) based on inclusion and exclusion criteria through prescreening through the Comprehensive Wound Center's (CWC) Limb Preservation Program and wound physicians and/or providers at OSUWMC. Wounds were treated with the PED before amputation surgery. Results: The intent of the study was to identify if PED was safe for clinical application based on visual observations of adverse or lack of adverse events on skin and wound tissue. The pilot testing performed on a small cohort (N = 8) of patients showed that with engineered voltage regulation of current flow to the open wound, the PED can be used with little to no visually observable adverse effects on chronic human skin wounds. Innovation: The PED was developed as a second-generation tunable electroceutical wound care dressing, which could potentially be used to treat wounds with deeper infections compared with current state of the art that treats wounds with treatment zone limited to the surface near topical application. Conclusion: Technology advances in design and fabrication of electroceutical dressings were leveraged to develop a tunable laboratory prototype that could be used as a disposable low-cost electroceutical wound care dressing on chronic wounds. Design revisions of PED-1 (1 kΩ ballast resistor) circumvented previously observed adverse effects on the skin in the vicinity of an open wound. PED-10 (including a 10 kΩ ballast resistor) was well tolerated in the small cohort of patients (N = 8) on whom it was tested, and the observations reported here warrant a larger study to determine the clinical impact on human wound healing and infection control

Hybrid Reference Current Generation Theory for Solar Fed UPFC System

The extensive usage of power electronic components creates harmonics in the voltage and current, because of which, the quality of delivered power gets affected. Therefore, it is essential to improve the quality of power, as we reveal in this paper. The problems of load voltage, source current, and power factors are mitigated by utilizing the unified power flow controller (UPFC), in which a combination of series and shunt converters are combined through a DC-link capacitor. To retain the link voltage and to maximize the delivered power, a PV module is introduced with a high gain converter, named the switched clamped diode boost (SCDB) converter, in which the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm is instigated for tracking the maximum power. To retain the link-voltage of the capacitor, the artificial neural network (ANN) is implemented. A proper control of UPFC is highly essential, which is achieved by the reference current generation with the aid of a hybrid algorithm. A genetic algorithm, hybridized with the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), is utilized for the generation of a switching sequence, and the generated pulse has been given to both the series and shunt converters through the PWM generator. Thus, the source current and load voltage harmonics are mitigated with reactive power compensation, which results in attaining a unity power factor. The projected methodology is simulated by MATLAB and it is perceived that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of 0.84% is attained, with almost a unity power factor, and this is validated with FPGA Spartan 6E hardware

ABSTRACT This paper analyze an effective comparison between Pulse width modulation (PWM) control approach and digital control approach for asymmetric DC-AC cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. The conventional available approach produces 2n+1 output level for n independent DC sources and the digital control approach produces 2 n+1 -1 output level for the same n independent DC sources with the same number switches. The proposed method also brings out the salient features of using Digital control over the conventional PWM control by producing a low total harmonic distortion level (THD) level while considering R-load. The simulation is done with the help of MATLAB and subsequently verified experimentally

Critical Review of PV Grid-Tied Inverters

    Get PDF
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems have been in use predominantly since the last decade. Inverter fed PV grid topologies are being used prominently to meet power requirements and to insert renewable forms of energy into power grids. At present, coping with growing electricity demands is a major challenge. This paper presents a detailed review of topological advancements in PV-Grid Tied Inverters along with the advantages, disadvantages and main features of each. The different types of inverters used in the literature in this context are presented. Reactive power is one of the ancillary services provided by PV. It is recommended that reactive power from the inverter to grid be injected for reactive power compensation in localized networks. This practice is being implemented in many countries, and researchers have been trying to find an optimal way of injecting reactive power into grids considering grid codes and requirements. Keeping in mind the importance of grid codes and standards, a review of grid integration, the popular configurations available in literature, Synchronization methods and standards is presented, citing the key features of each kind. For successful integration with a grid, coordination between the support devices used for reactive power compensation and their optimal reactive power capacity is important for stability in grid power. Hence, the most important and recommended intelligent algorithms for the optimization and proper coordination are peer reviewed and presented. Thus, an overview of Solar PV energy-fed inverters connected to the grid is presented in this paper, which can serve as a guide for researchers and policymakers

Two-line breeding in exploitation of thermo-sensitive genic male sterile system is pursued with the objective ofdevelopment of hybrids with high heterotic potential. A total of 66 new TGMS lines were developed and screenedunder sterility favoring environment for tgms gene expression during summer and sterility limiting environment duringwinter at Paddy Breeding Station, Coimbatore for the past five years. Out of 66 TGMS lines, 15 lines showed stableperformance and seven TGMS lines viz., COTGMS 02, COTGMS 07, COTGMS 10, COTGMS 11, COTGMS 12,COTGMS 13 and COTGMS 15 were completely pollen sterile throughout the summer period. These lines had widersterility expression period with very good floral traits viz., higher pollen sterility per cent, panicle and stigma exsertionper cent, wider glume opening favorable for enhanced out-crossing rate and seed set percentage during seed production
